Moving with Pets

Keep your furry friends safe and happy during the move.

September 22, 2023 Henry Johnson

Moving is stressful for humans, but it can be even more confusing and anxiety-inducing for pets. Dogs and cats are creatures of habit, and disrupting their routine can lead to behavioral issues. However, with a little extra care and planning, you can make the transition smooth for everyone in the family.

1. Update Microchip and Tags

Before you move, ensure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are updated with your new address and phone number. This is crucial in case your pet gets lost during the chaos of moving day.

2. Visit the Vet

If you're moving out of the area, request your pet's medical records from your current vet. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and has enough medication to last through the move.

3. Pack a Pet Essentials Kit

Just like you need an essentials bag, your pet does too. Include food, water, bowls, a leash, waste bags, toys, bedding, and any necessary medications. Keep this kit easily accessible.

4. Keep Pets Safe on Moving Day

On moving day, the best place for your pet is in a quiet room with the door closed, or at a friend's house. This prevents them from escaping or getting underfoot while movers are carrying heavy furniture.

5. Settle In Slowly

When you arrive at your new home, set up a designated space for your pet with their familiar bedding and toys. Let them explore the new environment at their own pace.

Pet Moving Hacks

  • Keep your pet's routine (feeding, walks) as consistent as possible.
  • Don't wash your pet's bedding right before the move; the familiar scent provides comfort.
  • Research pet-friendly parks and vets in your new neighborhood before you arrive.
  • Use pheromone sprays or diffusers to help calm anxious pets.
