Expert Packing Tips

Pack efficiently and ensure your belongings arrive safely.

Packing is often the most time-consuming part of moving. It can be overwhelming to look at all your belongings and wonder how they'll ever fit into boxes. But with a solid plan and the right techniques, you can pack like a pro and make your move much smoother. Here are our top expert packing tips.

1. Start Early and Plan Ahead

Don't leave packing until the last minute. Start weeks in advance by packing items you don't use daily, like off-season clothes, books, and decorative items. Create a packing schedule to keep yourself on track.

2. Use the Right Supplies

Invest in quality moving boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper. Avoid using old, damaged boxes from the grocery store, as they may collapse under the weight of your items. Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes to save time.

3. Pack Room by Room

Focus on one room at a time to stay organized. This makes packing more manageable and unpacking much easier. Don't mix items from different rooms in the same box.

4. Label Everything Clearly

Label every box with its contents and the room it belongs in. Use different colored markers or stickers for each room. Mark boxes containing fragile items as "FRAGILE" and indicate which side should be up.

5. Don't Overpack Boxes

Keep box weight manageable. Use small boxes for heavy items like books and canned goods, and large boxes for lighter items like linens and pillows. This prevents boxes from breaking and makes them easier to lift.

Packing Hacks

  • Use towels and blankets to wrap fragile items and fill empty spaces.
  • Pack an "essentials" box with toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents for the first night.
  • Take photos of electronic connections before unplugging them.
  • Use plastic wrap to keep drawers shut or to keep liquids from spilling.
