The Ultimate Moving Checklist

A week-by-week guide to a smooth and organized move.

September 18, 2023 Henry Johnson

Moving involves a million little details, and it's easy to forget something important. To help you stay on track, we've created this comprehensive moving checklist. By breaking down tasks into manageable weekly goals, you can reduce stress and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

8 Weeks Before: Planning and Decluttering

Start by creating a moving binder to keep all your documents, quotes, and receipts organized. Go through every room and decide what to keep, donate, or sell. This is also the time to research moving companies and get quotes.

6 Weeks Before: Hire Movers and Gather Supplies

Book your moving company to secure your preferred date. Start collecting moving boxes, tape, and packing materials. If you have children, contact their new school to transfer records.

4 Weeks Before: Start Packing and Notify Parties

Begin packing non-essential items like books and out-of-season clothes. File a change of address with the USPS and update your address with banks, insurance providers, and subscription services.

2 Weeks Before: Confirm Details and Deep Clean

Confirm the moving date and arrival time with your movers. Plan meals to use up food in your pantry and freezer. If you're renting, schedule a final walkthrough with your landlord.

Moving Day: Final Walkthrough and Essentials

Pack an essentials bag with everything you'll need for the first 24 hours. Do a final walkthrough of your old home to make sure nothing is left behind. Be available to answer questions for the movers.

Checklist Hacks

  • Create a "moving binder" (physical or digital) to keep contracts and receipts safe.
  • Schedule utility disconnections for the day *after* you move and connections for the day *before* you arrive.
  • Board pets or have a friend watch them on moving day to keep them safe and out of the way.
  • Keep some cash on hand for tipping your movers and buying snacks/drinks.
