Best Time to Move in Chicago: Parking & Weather

November 7, 2025 Conall Fahey

Chicago moves are shaped by seasons, parking rules, and neighborhood quirks. Here’s a practical 2025 guide to timing your move, securing legal parking, and avoiding weather surprises in Lakeview, Logan Square, and South Loop.

Best Months to Move

  • April–June: Mild temps, fewer snow/ice risks. Elevators are easier to book than peak summer.
  • September–October: Post-lease turnover with better availability. Streets less congested than summer festival season.
  • Avoid major events: Cubs games (Wrigleyville), marathons, and street festivals can complicate parking and access.

Parking & CDOT Permits

Use CDOT resources and your alderman’s ward office to confirm temporary no-parking signs or loading zone permits. In Lakeview and Logan Square, residential streets often need 48–72 hours’ notice for signage.

  • Check street cleaning schedules—tickets are common during spring cleaning.
  • For South Loop high-rises, coordinate with building management and verify dock hours and COI requirements.
  • Document signage placement with photos and times to resolve disputes.

Weather Planning

Chicago’s weather swings quickly. In spring and fall, pack floor protection, shrink-wrap for upholstery, and tarps for sudden showers. Winter moves require salt, stair runners, and extra time buffers.

Quick Checklist

  • Request building elevator and loading dock reservations 2–3 weeks out.
  • Place temporary no-parking signs 48 hours before move day.
  • Confirm COI language and additional insured for your building.
  • Prepare floor protection and weather contingencies.
