The Ultimate Guide to Packing Fragile Items

June 10, 2023 Conall Fahey

Proper packing is essential to prevent damage during your move. Whether it's fine china or a flat-screen TV, starting with high-quality materials—sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and packing tape—is your first line of defense.

Dishes and Glassware

For dishes and glassware, wrap each item individually in packing paper. Place them vertically in boxes (never flat) with plenty of cushioning at the bottom. Fill any gaps with crumpled paper to prevent movement during transit.

Artwork and Mirrors

For artwork and mirrors, use specialty boxes designed for these flat items. If those aren't available, sandwich the item between two pieces of cardboard and wrap the entire package in bubble wrap. Always mark these boxes as "Fragile" on all sides.

Electronics

Electronics should be packed in their original boxes whenever possible. If you no longer have them, use anti-static bubble wrap and ensure there's at least 2 inches of cushioning material on all sides to absorb shocks.

Packing Checklist

  • Dish pack boxes for kitchenware
  • Mirror boxes for art and mirrors
  • Anti-static materials for electronics
  • 2"+ cushioning on all sides
