Moving is the perfect opportunity to hit the reset button on your belongings. Why pay to move items you haven't used in years? Decluttering before you pack not only saves you money on moving costs but also makes unpacking in your new home much more enjoyable. Here is our guide to effective decluttering.
1. The "One Year" Rule
If you haven't used, worn, or looked at an item in the past year, it's time to let it go. Be ruthless. Exceptions can be made for sentimental items or seasonal gear, but be honest with yourself about what you really need.
2. Sort Into Categories
As you go through each room, create three piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Discard. Have trash bags and boxes ready. Once a "Donate" box is full, put it in your car immediately so you don't second-guess your decision.
3. Tackle One Area at a Time
Don't try to declutter your entire house in one day. Start with a small area, like a junk drawer or a linen closet, and work your way up to larger rooms. This prevents overwhelm and gives you a sense of accomplishment.
4. Digitize Paperwork
Paper clutter is heavy and takes up unnecessary space. Scan important documents and shred the originals (unless you need physical copies for legal reasons). Recycle old magazines, newspapers, and junk mail.
5. Don't Forget the Garage and Storage
Storage areas are often the biggest culprits for clutter. Go through old boxes you haven't opened since your last move. If you didn't miss the items inside, you probably don't need them.
